Race 3: Burfield Race Report PDF  | Print |

Hi all

Sorry for the delay in getting this report to you but I've had quite a disastrous week all stemming from the race at Burfield, Reading.

Okay let's start with the sailing which isn't going quite as I expected. The boat is beautiful, fast sometimes, and glides through the water. It's just that I'm taking a bit longer to get used to it than I thought I would. As where I was fighting for the lead in last year's travellers Trophy events. at the moment this year I'm running sort of midfield.

Having said this all of my starts were spot on every time on Wednesday which was probably the only plus of the day. In the morning it was incredibly light winds which I never do well sailing in. Considering this I came fourth and fifth in the first two races and then in the afternoon the wind picked up a little but not enough to make any difference And came sixth in the final race.

It is not by any means where want to be so I will be working tirelessly with my coach in order to get better in the liberty.

Changing the subject slightly having come off the water I was driving off the pontoon when I lost control of my electric wheelchair and I ended up 2 foot high in water which has completely written off my electric wheelchair. Fortunately I was not injured so that's a blessing that my poor wheelchair is going to go on to the scrapheap.

After the volunteers had put me into the car ready to go my shore crew noticed that there was a lot of play in one of the wheels of the road trailer. He had a look underneath and discovered that the wheel bearing of my new trailer had completely disintegrated. Fortunately there was somebody at the club with the tools and spare parts to repair it. All this took an extra two hours which made us incredibly late getting back home.

Not a great day but everyone has them! The next race we are attending is at Carsington in Derbyshire on 25 May.

Kind regards

Keith

“Despite Keith’s obvious challenges in life, he’s one of the most driven people I know – I like that – it kind of reminds me of myself.  He has an obvious talent for sailing and a particular aptitude for racing.  And with the right boat and the right technology to overcome his physical limitations, he will prove that he has the determination and skill to earn the right to compete with the best”.
